Muslim bin Al-Hajaaj was born in al-Kushayri al-Naysaburi in what is today modern Persia, in the Islamic year 202/common era year 817, or more possibly in 206/821. He travelled all over the middle east, to Iraq, the Hijaz, Syria and Egypt, seeking 'ilm علم -- (religious) knowledge. He learned under a number of famous hadith scholars.
