Mecca is a city located in the Hijaz region of the Arabian Peninsula and was the birthplace of Muhammad (570 CE), the founder of Islam. Almost a decade after claiming prophet-hood (610 CE), Muhammad was forced to flee to Medina in 622 CE. Ultimately, after erecting the Islamic state from his base in Medina, Muhammad was able to return to Mecca, this time as conqueror, in 630 CE.
