Rozdíly byly tak velké, že se Uthman a jeho společníci báli budoucích hádek o tom, který Korán je pravdivý. (Nemluvíme o výslovnosti, ale o obsahu). Proto Uthman požádal Hafsu o její kopii a přikázal udělat mnoho kopií a spálit a zničit všechny existující kopie Koránu. Uthman přikázal druhým akceptovat Hafsinu kopii, jako oficiální text Koránu. To ukazuje, že memorizace selhala v zachování Koránu (Korán znamená recitace) v jeho původní formě, ale bylo potřeba používat text.

	[[Al-Nurayn ~~and~~ Al-Wilaya\|Al-Nurayn ~~and~~ al-Wilaya]] ~~are two surahs~~ (~~chapters~~) ~~that are claimed to be included in the Qur'an by some Shi'ite sects~~. ~~These sects would supposedly argue that~~ Ali ~~had a different copy of the Qur'an as compared with the third Caliph Uthman~~. ~~However~~, ~~these surahs are widely seen as fabrications in most of the Muslim world~~. ~~Some believe these surahs to be forgeries~~, ~~intended to increase animosity towards the Shi'ite Muslims in the Sunni world~~. Tyto sekty se údajně hádaly, že Ali měl jinou kopii Koránu ve srovnání s třetím Chalífou Uthmanem. Nicméně, tyto súry jsou široce viděny jako smyšlené většinou muslimského světa. Někteří věří, že tyto súry jsou vymyšlené, se záměrem zvýšit nepřátelství vůči šítským muslimům v sunnitském světě.
