The hadith is very explicit that those who make and keep graven images (امثال) as well as painted pictures of objects or living things (صور) will be damned and not allowed into heaven. As such, Islamic scholars have traditionally condemned both actions as haram. Modern Arabic uses the same word for a painted picture as for a photograph, so there is controversy amongst modern Islamic scholars whether photography or even cinematography should be allowed.
