Bid‘ah (بدعة) is any type of innovation in Islam. In popular usage this has come to mean heresy. It comes from Al-Bada' meaning to create something without precedence. Though new laws are formed all the time to cope with situations or obstacles which Muslims may face in an ever-changing world, this Islamic jurisprudence is extracted from, and (traditionaly) cannot contradict,[1][2] the established Shari'ah (consisting of the Qur'an and Sunnah). Hence, today it is thought that bid'ah in worldly matters such as technology, medicine, computers, etc. is allowed, but bid'ah in religious matters are strictly forbidden, as they were by Muhammad himself.[3][4]
