A similar story appears in the Arabic Infancy Gospel (also known as the Syriac Infancy Gospel), combining elements from the ''Childhood of the Saviour'', ''Protoevangelium of James'', and the ''Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew''. Both these apocrypha contain verses that contradict the canonical Gospels.

Some suggest that this section of the Qur'an arose from three Christians who spoke with Muhammad, while others believe that the whole of the Qur'an is direct inspiration from God to Muhammad through the archangel Gabriel (Jibril). Nonetheless it is interesting to see this account of the early life of Jesus reinforced in the Qur'an, and can increase our confidence in the authenticity of that account of the life of Jesus.
