Islam and Women: Difference between revisions

Have added a verse many commentators have taken as approval that women are deceiving and scheming and linked the examples. As well as given caveat that this isn't the sole view as the words here don't come directly from the prophets mouth - however I think is worth including to get the whole picture.

"An omen is in a dwelling, a woman or a horse." Abu Dawud said: This tradition was read out to al-Harith b. Miskin and I was witness. It was said to him that Ibn Qasim told him that Malik was asked about evil omen in a horse and in a house. He replied: There are many houses in which people lived and perished and again others lived therein and they also perished. This is its explanation so far as we know. Allah knows best. === Women are good at deceiving/scheming ===
Quran 12:23-12:34 relates a story following prophet Yunus, where a married woman tries to seduce him. Her husband catches her and she accuses Yusuf of being the one to try and to seduce her. however the husband does not believe his wife due to his shirt being ripped on the back (and not the front). When referring to the adulterous woman's behaviour, her husband states that women (in general - not just the adulterer) are deceiving/scheming.
{{Quote|{{Quran|12|28}}|So when the governor saw his shirt torn from behind, he said, “Indeed this is a deception of women; undoubtedly the deception of women is very great.”}}
While less explicit than the other verses and Islamic literature quoted in this article at being taken to apply to all women as the words do not come directly from a prophets mouth, this extremely misogynistic statement is never challenged by Yunus, and so many have taken this as approval of women being deceiving/scheming. Taken with the other direct quotes on women from the Qur'an and sunnah, it is easy to see why that was the case. For example, prominent scholars commentators such as Al-Qurtubi And al-Zamakhshari in their tafsirs have written in regards to this verse:
{{Quote|{{cite web| url=https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=1&tTafsirNo=5&tSoraNo=12&tAyahNo=27&tDisplay=yes&Page=3&Size=1&LanguageId=1 | title=Tafseer al-Qurtubi 12:27}}|It was said: The witness said it to her. And the plot: cunning and trickery, and it was mentioned in “Al-Anfal”. {Indeed, your plot is great}. Rather, he said “great” because of the greatness of their temptation and deceit in getting rid of their predicament. Muqatil said, on the authority of Yahya bin Abi Kathir, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “The plot of women is greater than the plot of Satan, because God Almighty says: Indeed, the plot of Satan is weak and He said: Indeed, your plot is great. ".}}

The scheming of women is exalted because even though it is against men, women are gentler in their scheming, more resourceful in their scheming, and are gentler and gentler in doing so, and thus they overpower men.}}
