Muslims do not fast in Ramadan so they can be healthy. They fast because Allah commanded them to. If "God" tells you to do something you better do it, unless you want to end up like Satan. All God asked Satan to do was bow down to one of his creations(Adam) and when Satan refused to obey the command he was punished. Muslims also fast in Ramadan because it is supposed o be a reminder for them of everything they should be grateful for. Most people aren't that grateful when drinking a glass of water, but when you drink that glass of water after not having anything but air and spit down your throat for the whole day you actually gratify Allah by thanking him verbally, mentally, and physically. By the way Islam is just one of numerous religions (Hinduism, Christianity, Catholicism etc) that prescribe fasting for its people. Fasting in Islam is  not mandatory for the sick, travelers, menstruating women, lactating women and young children.
