Note that this hadith and others which mention this event are commonly mistranslated as the sun rising "from the west". In every case, such hadiths actually say in the arabic, ''min maghribiha'' (مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا), which is literally "from its setting place" with the possessive suffix and without the definite article. "From the west" would be rather, ''min al maghriba'' as in {{Quran|2|258}} quoted below. Furthermore, the verb "rises" in such hadiths, ''taṭluʿa'' (تَطْلُعَ) is the one which appears in {{Quran|18|90}} when Dhu'l Qarnayn reaches the rising place of the sun and finds it rising on a people without shelter.

Some today proffer metaphorical interpretation that the "rising of the Sun from the west" refers to the rise of the Western civilization, though this would leave the segment regarding the beast unexplained.
Some today proffer a metaphorical interpretation that the "rising of the Sun from the west" refers to the rise of the Western civilization. As noted above, this stems from the common mistranslation of the phrase, and would also leave the segment regarding the beast unexplained.
